Industrial Plug Socket
Industrial Plug & Socket
Specifications
Industrial plugs and sockets used in commercial, heavy duty, and manufacturing environments are governed globally by the international standard IEC 60309 (often historically or colloquially referred to as CEE or Pin & Sleeve connectors).
Unlike standard domestic plugs, these are designed to handle much higher voltages and currents while providing robust environmental protection.
1. Electrical Ratings & Specifications
Voltage Range: Up to 1000V DC or AC (commonly 110V, 230V, 415V, and 690V).
Current Capacity (Amperage): Standardised globally into two main series:
Series I (International/European standard): 16A, 32A, 63A, 125A, 250A, 400A, 630A, and 800A.
Series II (North American standard): 20A, 30A, 60A, 100A.
Frequency: Standardly handles up to 500 Hz.
Operating Temperature: Typically specified to function reliably from -25°C to +40°C.

Pin Configurations & Wiring Types
The standard specifies configurations based on the number of contact pins required for the supply circuit. In all standard low-voltage configurations, the Earth/Ground pin is physically thicker (by 2mm) than the phase/neutral pins to act as a visual guide and ensure safety.
2P+E (3-Pin): Phase + Neutral + Earth. Used for single-phase systems (typically Blue or Yellow).
3P+E (4-Pin): 3 Phases + Earth. Used for balanced three-phase loads such as electric motors where a neutral wire isn’t required (typically Red).
3P+N+E (5-Pin): 3 Phases + Neutral + Earth. Used for unbalanced three-phase distribution systems that need to supply both 415V three-phase and 230V single-phase loads simultaneously (typically Red).

Ingress Protection (IP) & Environmental Ratings
Because industrial settings contain dust, flying debris, moisture, or chemical splashes, the housings are made of highly impact-resistant, UV-stabilized polymers (like Polyamide 6) and carry specific IP ratings:
**IP44 (Splash-proof): Features a spring-loaded hinged cap on the socket. When the plug is pushed in, a small notch on the cap catches onto the plug’s shroud to keep it secure. Ideal for indoor workshops and general manufacturing.
**IP67 / IP68 (Waterproof/Watertight): Features a threaded locking ring on the plug that tightly screws onto the socket, compressed against a rubber gasket. Essential for construction sites, food processing plants (frequent washdowns), marine applications, and outdoor exposures.
